Norway March 2012
Kicksled Birding Stejneger’s Scoter and Glaucous-winged Gull there just in the last couple of months. Remember them? Working with the guys in Varanger (Arctic Norway) on doing a Birding Frontiers special in late March/ early April 2012. Think 1000′s and 1000′s of Brunnich’s Guillemots, looking … Continue reading

Awesome photos of Glaucous-winged Gull
Vardø Harbour today I was here, with Tormod only 2 months ago, talking about what gulls might get found! Look what he found there today. Here’s his story: “Hello Martin! Just back from Vardø Harbour, with nice bird news: Me and my wife … Continue reading

Arctic or Mealy Redpoll
Yes it was one (if you guessed right) Somewhat cheekily I recently posted a photo (2nd one below) from Varanger in May and asked the question “Arctic or Mealy Redpoll”. Here, then, the same bird’s details more fully revealed. Not too tricky with good views, but … Continue reading

THANK YOU! Been meaning to say this after we passed 200,000 views earlier in the month. The Birding Frontiers blog has been going just over 10 months and we are on the way to 1/4 million views. Guess we will hit it soon after … Continue reading

Stejneger’s Scoter – Norway
1st summer male- Varanger!!! Just over a month ago I was envisioning the guys in Vardø, – they should get Stejneger’s Scoter. Early this morning only 15 minutes north of Vardø, at Persfjordena, Varanger a first summer male ‘White-winged type’ Scoter was found by birder, … Continue reading

Arctic Guillemot ssp. hyperborea
Identification possible? I’m back on 13th May on Hornøya Island, Varanger, by myself for the best part of 4 hours. Just a wonderful time amoung the auks. Specifically Arctic Guillemots, Razorbills, Puffins and Brünnich’s Guillemots. Also Shag, argentatus Herring Gulls (including the kind of pale “is it … Continue reading

Varanger’s Auk Island
Hornøya Friday 13th May, it was the first day without the rest of the gang. An early morning walk on Vardø Island got me a flushed Woodcock and singing Shore Lark. Summer plumaged Purple Sandpipers and a 3rd summer Glaucous Gull were in the harbour as … Continue reading

The Varanger Crew
Thanks! This is a pause mid-blog on the trip to say thank you. Brünnich’s Guillemot and friends still to come. To Tormod Amundsen who organised the whole promotion tour. A very enterprising young Norwegian with load of vision and energy (and projects!). He descibes himself as … Continue reading

Siberian Snow Bunting
Should it be on the British List? Heading up the northern shoreline of the Varanger fjord, Tormod and I encountered some fantastic flocks of seaducks. With some much food-rich water, most bays contain seaducks and gulls. With a bit of looking a few Steller’s Eiderwere found and stragglers of the wintering King Eider population. In one bay we … Continue reading
